Understanding scar treatment — what it can and cannot do
A scar forms whenever the skin heals from a wound. Treatment can meaningfully improve the appearance, texture and comfort of a scar — reducing its height, redness or stiffness — but scars do not disappear entirely. The goal is a result that is less noticeable and, where relevant, more functional.
The right treatment depends on scar type, age, location and your skin. Keloids, hypertrophic scars, post-surgical scars and burn scars each respond differently. Dr Amna’s background in reconstructive and burn surgery means complex cases — including thick burn scars and scars that limit movement — are assessed and managed with appropriate depth.

Scar treatment approaches we offer
The most suitable approach is determined at your consultation, based on scar type, skin, and your individual history. Some scars benefit from a combination of treatments over time.
Laser scar treatment
Laser therapy can reduce redness, flatten raised scars and improve skin texture. Different laser types suit different scar profiles — your clinician selects the appropriate modality and settings. Multiple sessions are usually needed, and results vary by individual.
Keloid & hypertrophic scar management
Keloids and hypertrophic scars are raised, thickened scars that can be itchy or uncomfortable. Management may include steroid injections, silicone therapy, laser, or a combination. Keloids in particular can recur; a considered, staged plan is important.
Surgical scar revision
In selected cases, surgical revision can reposition or refine a scar that has healed poorly — for instance a wide, uneven or functionally restricting scar. This is assessed carefully, as surgery itself creates a new scar; the aim is an improved outcome in a better location or with better orientation.
What to expect during and after treatment
Non-surgical treatments such as laser or injections are typically carried out in the clinic with minimal downtime, though the skin may be red or sensitive for a short period after. A course of treatments over several weeks or months is often more effective than a single session, and your clinician will outline what a realistic programme looks like for your scar.
Surgical revision carries a longer recovery, similar to any minor-to-moderate surgical procedure. Full healing of the new scar takes months, and sun protection is important throughout. You receive a clear aftercare plan before you leave the clinic.
- Laser and injections: minimal downtime, possible short-term redness
- Multiple treatment sessions usually needed for best results
- Sun protection is important during and after any scar treatment
- Surgical revision: healing timeline discussed individually at consultation
Scar treatment — frequently asked questions
What types of scars can be treated?
We treat keloid and hypertrophic scars, post-surgical scars, burn scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks. Acne scars are primarily addressed through our microneedling service. At consultation, Dr Amna assesses your scar and advises which treatments are appropriate for your specific case.
Can a scar be removed completely?
Scars cannot be erased entirely. What treatment can do is meaningfully improve the appearance, colour, texture and comfort of a scar, so it becomes less noticeable. The degree of improvement varies by scar type, skin, and individual healing. You will receive an honest assessment of what is realistic for your scar at consultation.
How are keloids treated?
Keloids require a considered approach because they can recur after treatment. Management typically involves steroid injections to reduce size and discomfort, sometimes combined with silicone sheets or laser. In selected cases surgical removal is considered, but this is planned carefully to reduce the chance of re-formation. A staged plan is often more effective than a single intervention.
What is the difference between laser treatment and surgical revision?
Laser treatment is a non-surgical approach that improves colour, texture and surface quality of a scar over a course of sessions. Surgical revision physically repositions or removes a scar, and is considered when a scar has healed poorly, is functionally restricting movement, or is not responding to non-surgical methods. Both are discussed at consultation, and many cases benefit from a combination.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
This depends on the scar type, size and how it responds to treatment. Laser and injection programmes typically involve several sessions spaced weeks apart; your clinician will set a realistic expectation after assessing your scar. Results appear gradually, and some people benefit from maintenance treatments over time.
How much does scar treatment cost in Dubai?
The cost depends on the type of treatment recommended, the number of sessions, and your individual case. We provide a clear quote after your consultation with Dr Amna. Message us on WhatsApp to arrange your consultation.
